Grades: Spurs vs. Hornets – Summer League Game #7

Summer league in Las Vegas was going swimmingly for the San Antonio Spurs … until they ran into the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets (4-0) used a 21-0 run in the second quarter to blow the game wide open and cruise to a 106-81 victory over the previously undefeated Spurs. The final score doesn’t tell the true story of how much San Antonio was dominated.

The Spurs (3-1), who have shut down Dylan Harper for the rest of summer league, play their final game on Saturday versus the Detroit Pistons.

    Stats: Spurs vs. Hornets

Spurs vs. Hornets – Final Grades

    Carter Bryant

The silver lining of this blowout loss was Bryant’s offensive play. He snapped out of his scoring slump in a big way, scoring 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting including 4-for-6 from three-point range. Bryant also authored impressive drives to the hoop and legitimately impressive passes. He played with much more confidence and, as a result, his sky-high potential was on full display. Defensively, Carter had some bright moments but he wasn’t nearly as tenacious as he was earlier in summer league.

    Grade: B+

    Harrison Ingram

Ingram has to hit threes to make it in the NBA so it was great to see him go 5-for-11 from deep — even if all 11 attempts were basically wide open. Unfortunately, those threes were about the extent of his positive production against the Hornets. Ingram’s defense left a lot to be desired, he wasn’t as active on the boards as usual and even his trustworthy passing ability was off-kilter.

    Grade: C+

    Riley Minix

I thought this was actually a really worrisome outing for Minix. The Spurs desperately needed someone to step up and provide a scoring punch — and Minix didn’t deliver. He looked painfully unathletic at times, which negatively impacted him on both sides of the court. There were times Minix tried to carry a larger load but he was simply incapable.

    Grade: C

    David Jones-Garcia

Jones-Garcia was due for a return to earth outing after a scorching hot start to summer league and that’s exactly what happened versus Charlotte. He was only 2-for-9 on threes, 2-for-5 on twos and shot just a pair of free throws. His ball-handling looked iffy and his ability to efficiently pass the basketball remains a glaring question mark. Jones-Garcia’s defensive effort was nothing to write home to the Dominican Republic about, although he deserves credit for his determination on the boards.

    Grade: C-

    Ibrahima Diallo

Diallo had a few notable defensive plays, including a couple of nice blocks. He also rebounded well. Sadly, he was such a liability on offense that he single-handedly bogged down the flow at times.

    Grade: C

    Dexter Dennis

Coming into this game, I thought Dennis had a chance to land a two-way contract in San Antonio or elsewhere. Regrettably, his play against the Hornets was pretty darn terrible. He missed all his shots from deep, finished 1-for-7 from the field, had trouble holding onto the ball and his handle looked painfully loose. Dennis had a few opportunities to utilize his elite athleticism but instead he avoided contact. I still like him as a two-way prospect but the amount of discoordination he exhibited in this game was concerning.

    Grade: D+

    Kyle Mangas

Make-A-Wish Mangas continues to inexplicably rack up summer league minutes. He can’t do much on the offensive end but he’s actually impressive on that end compared to his uselessness on the defensive end.

    Grade: D

    Osayi Osifo

With Osifo on the court, the Spurs looked halfway decent. While he wasn’t too efficient, Osifo’s relentless activity helped San Antonio compete. Him leading the bench with three assists is noteworthy because he has steadily become a more competent passer as summer league has progressed.

    Grade: B

    Jameer Nelson, Jr.

The Hornets were going under screens and daring Nelson to shoot — and the strategy paid hefty dividends. Nelson was 1-for-8 from the field and didn’t trust his jumper at all. His uncharacteristic indecision negated what would have otherwise been one of his better playmaking outings. Defensively, I liked his effort but his tangible impact was minimal.

    Grade: C-

    Cam Carter

Carter’s excitement-to-minute ratio continues to shine. In five garbage minutes, he scored seven fancy points. It’s too bad Carter could never crack the rotation in this summer league session.

    Grade: Inc.

    Chibuzo Agbo

Agbo clearly knows where his bread is buttered. In five minutes, he attempted four three-pointers. Unfortunately for him, all four ended up being misfires.

    Grade: Inc.

    Mike Noyes

Noyes has to take some blame for this dud of a performance. Not having Harper obviously hurt the team’s chances but the lifeless nature of the team was more of an issue. Noyes also loses some points for his Mangas devotion and for putting Bryant back into the game late in the fourth quarter only to have Bryant turn his ankle in garbage time.

    Grade: D
